Washington, D. C., formally the District of Columbia, is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country’s East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any state. Named in honor of President Greorge Wahingston, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital.
There are many historic sites and museums in Washington, D.C.: the National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial, the United States Capitol are the most relevant.
There are also important institutions: The National Archives, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery of Art, and the Georgetown University among many others.

Georgetown, a historic neighborhood in Washington, D. C., founded in 1751, is located in the northwest of Washington, D. C. Visitors to Georgetown can find popular shops, restaurants and bars on M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, and the Washington Harbour complex overlooking the beautiful Potomac River.
Visitors can take walking tours of this historic district and there are also boat tours. An important landmark is the Old Stone House built in 1765, which is the oldest intact house. Another attraction is Georgetown University. Also, there are other important places to visit like the National park of Chesapeake Ohio Canal, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the Dumbarton Oaks mansion, and the embassies of Sweden and France.
